Snowy Weather in Abilene

Snowy Weather in Abilene
Originally uploaded by CoreBurn.

We got some snow here in Abilene today. Not a lot, but snow is pretty rare here. That was one hell of a cold front though! It was seriously over 72deg at lunch time yesterday, and by 6pm it was 32deg... then it got down to 25deg during the night.

I wish I could get out to take some better pics, but I have to be at work.

Two Swiss scientists said on Wednesday they had been able to identify a part of the brain that may be responsible for the "out-of-body" experiences of patients who came close to death.[...]

Researchers gaze at cloud formations

from PhysOrg.com
Finnish researchers analyzing cloud formations say ozone destruction in the Earth's stratosphere might be occurring at a faster pace than thought.

Anatoli Bogdan and colleagues at the University of Helsinki say they reached that conclusion after studying low-temperature thin and subvisible cirrus, or SVC.

SVCs cover about one-third of the planet and affect global temperatures by reflecting sunlight back into space and preventing terrestrial heat from escaping into space. In addition, the scientists say ice particles in SVCs have a drying or dehydrating effect on the upper troposphere.[...]

Mars Global Surveyor Still Silent

from PhysOrg.com
Two more attempts to regain contact with NASA's Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft failed this week.

The 10-year-old probe last had radio communication with Earth on Nov. 2, and NASA said earlier this week that the spacecraft's mission to map the surface of the Red Planet was likely at an end.

But efforts to find out if the orbiting spacecraft was still working continued, including transmitting commands for Mars Global Surveyor to send signals to the NASA rover Opportunity operating on the surface of Mars.[...]
